What is EYFS? A Simple Parent's Guide to Early Years Foundation Stage

By Denise10 June 20264 min read

If you've looked at any childminder or nursery in Gillingham, you've probably seen the phrase "EYFS-aligned" or "following the EYFS framework." But what does that actually mean — and why should you care?

What is the EYFS?

EYFS stands for Early Years Foundation Stage. It is the national framework set by the UK Government that applies to all childcare providers in England — including childminders, nurseries, pre-schools, and reception classes.

It sets out the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age 5.

Put simply: the EYFS is the rulebook that every registered childminder and nursery must follow to ensure your child is safe, developing well, and being given the right opportunities.

The 7 Areas of Learning

The EYFS splits child development into 7 areas:

Prime Areas (essential foundations):

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Specific Areas (built on the prime areas):

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

A good childminder weaves all 7 areas into daily activities — not through formal teaching, but through play, conversation, and exploration.

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

At Dees Curious Minds, EYFS learning happens naturally throughout the day:

  • Reading corner time → Literacy and Communication
  • Sensory water play → Understanding the World and Physical Development
  • Painting and craft → Expressive Arts and Mathematics (shapes, patterns)
  • Garden exploration → Physical Development and Understanding the World
  • Singing and rhyming → Communication, Language and Literacy
"Children don't learn by sitting still. They learn by doing, touching, exploring and talking — that's the heart of EYFS." — Denise

EYFS and Progress Tracking

Registered childminders are required to observe and track your child's progress against EYFS milestones. You will receive regular progress updates showing how your child is developing across the 7 areas.

This helps you understand exactly where your child is thriving — and where a little extra support might help.

Why Choose an EYFS-Aligned Childminder?

When your child moves to a nursery or Reception class at school, they will already be familiar with the routines, expectations, and learning approaches. An EYFS-aligned home childminder provides the perfect bridge between home and formal education.
